Singing Psalms:

Concerns for Christians

Friday, October 12
3:15 PM – 4:30 PM

Clinician: Fr. Michael Joncas

In this workshop, I would like to give some background to the psalms as texts (a little bit on how Hebrew works as a language); as poetic texts (“thought-rhyme” [parallelism] as a characteristic of Hebrew poetry); as structured poetic texts (psalm genres: laments, thanksgivings, hymns). I’d then like to demonstrate how musicians have set three texts: monophonic chant; harmonic chant (Anglican); “pulsed” chant (Gelineau); verse-refrain; through-composed.
