Introduction to the Organ for Pianists

The church organ has a rich and storied history of supporting choirs, enhancing special masses, and encouraging congregational singing. Despite its decline in use among parishes across the United States, the organ offers invaluable benefits for pianists eager to expand their musical repertoire. Combining the organ with the piano opens up a vast array of possibilities for classical pianists. The organ adds depth and richness to praise bands, creating a fuller, more engaging sound. For Latin American ensembles, the organ’s unique tonal qualities contribute significantly to the vibrant diversity of styles in Latin America.

This session is designed to empower pianists by demonstrating how to effectively incorporate the organ into various musical settings. We will explore the fundamental mechanics of the organ, essential playing techniques, and the intriguing array of registrations (sounds) available. Participants will be encouraged to play, ensuring a hands-on, immersive experience that will inspire them to embrace the organ’s potential in their music-making!

Improvisation at the Organ: Adapting Various Latin American Styles

The church organ has long been a cornerstone of congregational hymn singing. It not only elevates the congregation’s voice in song but also beautifully accompanies the choir during their chants and anthems while supporting the liturgical actions of the Mass. Yet, for many organists, engaging with Latin American styles presents a wonderful opportunity for growth. We often need to learn how to improvise in innovative ways, embrace a different language, and explore musical expressions not commonly taught in traditional music programs.

In this enriching session, we will dive into the diverse musical styles of Latin America, spanning Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, and examine how they intertwine with the church’s sacred repertoire. We will cover vibrant styles such as Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, Huapango, Habanera, Cumbia, Carnavalito, Bolero, and more. With a strong emphasis on improvisation, participants will have the chance to engage hands-on, allowing for a truly immersive experience that can transform your musical practice. Join us and expand your musical horizons!
